Questions about versions
Which Minecraft version should I play on a server?
Most servers today run the newest version (1.21) and also let older clients join. Pick the newest version your launcher offers unless a server says otherwise. PvP and minigame players often choose 1.8 because it has no attack cooldown.
Why are so many PvP servers on 1.8?
Minecraft 1.9 added an attack cooldown, which changed how combat feels. Many PvP players prefer the faster 1.8 combat, so PvP, Bed Wars and other minigame servers often support 1.8 or keep 1.8-style combat on newer versions.
Can I join a server with a different version than mine?
Often yes. Many servers use plugins such as ViaVersion so players on several versions can join. Each server page here shows the versions we saw the server accept, from our own login tests.
How do I change my Minecraft version?
In the official launcher, open Installations, click New installation, choose the version you need and press Play. Bedrock Edition always uses the newest version.
