Best Minecraft server lists

How the big Minecraft server lists rank servers, which ones sell the top spots and which check player counts. Every fact links to the list's own page.

Checked · By the CraftRank team

Short answer: minecraftservers.org and Minecraft-MP are the biggest Minecraft server lists, with roughly 20,000 and 9,000 servers. Both rank mainly by player votes that reset every month, and both sell the first rows of the page by auction. If you care most about honest rankings, look for a list that publishes its ranking rules, labels paid spots and checks player counts itself.

What to look for in a server list

  • A published ranking rule. “Votes this month” is simple and easy to check. A secret “quality score” is not.
  • Clearly labelled paid spots. Almost every list sells some space. It should look different from the real ranking.
  • Live checks. Player counts, uptime and versions should be measured by the list, not typed in by the owner.
  • A fake player check. A count that sits at the limit all day is almost always made up.
  • Votifier support, so servers can reward players for voting.

Common problems with server lists

  • Votes are bought and sold. Sellers openly offer thousands of votes for the big lists for a few dollars. Source
  • Player counts can be faked. Plugins that change the player count a list sees have existed for years; Spigot refused one as unethical. Source
  • Top spots go to the highest bidder. Most big lists sell the first rows by auction. That is fine when it is clearly labelled, but the first servers you see are often not the most popular ones. Source

Where CraftRank falls short

We run CraftRank, so take our view of ourselves with care. What we do: rank by votes this month only, label sponsored spots, check every server every 5 minutes and flag faked player counts (how it works). Where we are weaker:

  • Much smaller. 207 servers against tens of thousands on the big lists, so many servers you know are not here yet.
  • Fewer votes, so a handful of votes can move a server up or down early in the month.
  • Newer, with fewer reviews and less history per server.
  • We sell sponsored spots too. They are labelled and never change the ranking, but they are paid.

Questions

What is the best Minecraft server list?

There is no single best one. minecraftservers.org and Minecraft-MP are the biggest and have the most servers. If you want rankings you can trust, pick a list that says how it ranks, labels paid spots clearly and checks player counts itself. CraftRank ranks by votes only, labels sponsored spots and flags faked player counts, but it is newer and lists far fewer servers than the big ones.

Are Minecraft server list rankings pay-to-win?

On most big lists the top rows of the page are sold, usually by auction, and some lists sell bonus votes. The normal ranking below them is mostly by votes. Check how a list marks paid rows before trusting the first results.

How do server lists know how many players are online?

They connect to the server the same way the game does and read the number the server reports. A server can report a made-up number, so a list has to compare the count over time to spot fakes.

Which server list should I put my server on?

Most owners list on several. The big lists bring the most visitors; smaller lists are easier to rank on. Votifier support lets you reward players for voting on each of them.
