Java vs Bedrock servers and crossplay

The differences between Java and Bedrock Minecraft servers, which devices can join which, and how Geyser lets Bedrock players join Java servers.

Minecraft comes in two editions that can't normally play together: Java Edition on PC, Mac and Linux, and Bedrock Edition on Windows, phones, tablets, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch.

The main differences for servers

  • Java servers have the biggest choice of plugins and mods, which is why most large public servers are Java.
  • Bedrock servers reach players on every device, but consoles only list featured servers.
  • Default ports differ: TCP 25565 for Java and UDP 19132 for Bedrock.

Crossplay with Geyser

Geyser is a free plugin that translates between the two editions, so Bedrock players can join a Java server. With Floodgate added, they don't even need a Java account. Bedrock players then connect to the same address on the Bedrock port.

We test every Java server on CraftRank for a Bedrock port. Servers that accept both are marked “Java + Bedrock”, and the server page shows the address and port Bedrock players should use. You can browse all of them on the Bedrock servers list.

Which one should you pick?

Playing on PC with mods or big minigame networks in mind? Java. Playing on a phone or console, or with friends who do? Look for Bedrock or “Java + Bedrock” servers. Running a server? Java with Geyser gives you both audiences; see how to make a Minecraft server.
